Fulbright advisor meets with local secondary school teachers

On Saturday, November 9, 2013 Nikolaos Tourides, educational advisor for the Fulbright Foundation in Greece, offered an information session for secondary educators in the CHS’s “Nikos Mazarakis Family” Lecture Hall. The event was co-organized by CHS GR, the Fulbright Foundation in Greece, and the Office of Secondary Education of the Argolid. Mr. Tourides introduced educators to undergraduate studies in the U.S. and outlined the American educational system. He also provided information about scholarships offered by the Fulbright Foundation to Greek educators for intensive training programs and research in U.S. educational institutions.

CHS GR launches Events Series 2014

On Wednesday, November 13, 2013 the Center for Hellenic Studies launched its “Events Series 2014.” CHS GR is pleased to be co-organizing this program for the third consecutive year with the municipalities of Nafplion, Argos-Mycenae, Epidaurus and Ermionida. Theodore Papangelis, Professor of Latin Literature, Department of Philology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Member of the Academy of Athens, gave the inaugural lecture, entitled “Translatio Imperii: Rome as a Continuous Historical Legacy.” The guest respondent was Sofia Papaioannou, Associate Professor of Latin Literature, Department of Philology, Faculty of Philosophy, National Kapodistrian University of Athens.

CHS GR participates in Harvard OIP annual photo contest

On November 14, 2013 the award ceremony for the 10th annual Harvard Office of International Programs (OIP) photo contest took place at Harvard in Cambridge, MA. The eligible students have participated in Harvard programs abroad. CHS GR awarded Rishav Mukherji (Harvard student and alumnus of the Harvard Summer School in Olympia and Nafplion) for best photo taken in Greece (“Inside the Castle of Methoni”), and presented several honorable mentions. Photos will be uploaded on the Center’s Facebook page.

The 3rd annual literary event of the Oxford University Alumni Society of Greece in cooperation with CHS GR and the annual poetry symposium “Paros Symposium”

On Saturday, November 30, 2013 the Oxford University Alumni Society of Greece, the CHS GR and the organizers of the annual poetry symposium “Paros Symposium” (S.Gevirtz-S.Kouka) co-organized the Society’s 3rd annual literary event, which took place in the offices of the Greek Archaeologists Society in Athens. Members and guests of the organizers read excerpts from their poetry and prose works.

Events Series 2014 featured a lecture by Aikaterini Polymerou-Kamilaki

On Wednesday, December 11, 2013 the CHS GR, in cooperation with the Folklore Peloponnesian Foundation, presented Aikaterini Polymerou Kamilaki, Director, Hellenic Folklore Research Center, Academy of Athens, who gave a lecture entitled ‘“Hidden in long- suffering Romiosyne, when I see Queen Greece from afar”: Thoughts on a distich by Palamas.”’ The event took place at the Center’s “Nikos Mazarakis Family” Lecture Hall and included guest respondent Socrates Loupas, an art historian.

CHS Summer Internship Program 2014 application is now open

The Summer Internship Program 2014 will begin at the end of May, 2014. Undergraduates interested in participating in the program must submit their applications by February 12, 2014. CHS GR representatives recently visited collaborating universities in order to inform students, professors, and administrative offices about the program and potential scholarships for this year.

Digital Recourses program addresses students from all over Greece

As one of its activities for students and schools, the CHS continues to offer the program “Introduction to the Digital Resources for Knowledge: The Digital Library of the CHS GR.” Many schools from throughout Greece have already visited or plan to visit the Center in order to participate. The program’s main purpose is to introduce students to digital technology and methods currently used by academic institutions for the dissemination of research and other scholarly resources.

CHS GR names interns from the Department of Theater Studies, University of Peloponnese

The CHS has the pleasure of hosting Ms. Thalia Tsiara, and Mr. George Giannakoulis, Department of Theatrical Studies, UOP, as undergraduate interns.

Upcoming Events

CHS GR announces annual High School Summer Program alumni reunion

At the end of December 2013, the annual High School Summer Program (HSSP) Alumni reunion will take place at the CHS. Nicolas Prevelakis, HSSP Program Director and Lecturer in Harvard’s Committee on Degrees in Social Studies, will meet with Katerina Chatzisavva and Iliana Papangeli, Greek teaching fellows from the 2012 and 2013 programs. Planning for the High School Summer Program (HSSP) 2014 is underway. CHS GR will send program announcements and updates beginning in the new year. The HSSP 2014 Program will be accepting two undergraduate students from Harvard, who will serve as teaching fellows. Harvard undergraduates must apply online by February 12, 2014.

CHS DC January Term in Greece to begin January 6

The third consecutive “January Term Program in Greece,” organized by the CHS DC, will begin on January 6, 2014, and will run for three weeks. Gregory Nagy, Director of CHS DC, and Kenny Morrell, Professor of Classical Studies at Rhodes College, will lead 11 eleven undergraduates from US and other universities. The team will visit Crete, the Argolis, and the wider region of Attica, focusing -through visits and seminars- on various periods of antiquity.

Events Series 2014 program for January and February 2014

In the next two months the 2014 Events Series 2014 will feature two other lectures. On January 15, Stelios Virvidakis, Professor of Philosophy, will speak in Nafplion; Aristoteles Mentzos, Professor of Byzantine Archaeology, will speak on February 5 in Argos. The CHS will soon send more detailed information about these events.

Useful Information

Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece will be closed to the public from Monday, December 23, 2013 until Wednesday, January 1, 2014 for the holidays.
